During the 30th Anniversary Meeting of the China Nonmetallic Mineral Industry Association, speakers discussed African graphite products are entering China gradually.

Held on October 28 and 29 in Changsha, China, the 30th Anniversary Meeting saw some speakers discuss the implications of an influx of African graphite products into China on the domestic graphite market.

Chuanyao Sun of Beijing General Research Institute of Mining and Metallurgy spoke of the cooperation between the institute and foreign graphite companies, adding that the institute has designed processing methods for graphite mines in both Mozambique and Canada.

For Mozambique graphite with high grade ore (32.36% carbon content), the institute recommended processing method advises crushing five times and fine processing seven times, in order to protect the large flake and achieve profit quickly. This can result in a 96.71% carbon content with a yield rate of 29% and recovery rate of 87%.

For the Canadian graphite mine with an ore grade of only 1.98%, where 99% of the flakes are above 0.15 mm and 75% are above 0.3 mm, the institute recommended crushing six times and fine processing nine times to achieve 95% grade final products, with 86% above 0.15 mm and 60% above 0.3 mm. This process is said to have already been adopted by the Canadian producer. The yield rate and recovery rate for fixed carbon are 1.95% and 96.43%, respectively.

BTR New Energy Co., which signed an MoU agreement with Syrah Resources earlier this year, however, warned delegates about competition from Africa.

Xueqin He, president of BTR, noted the difference between companies being set-up in Africa compared with Chinese graphite companies, and the disadvantage this creates. One difference being that, in China, a company has to be deemed profitable for some years before it can be listed and thus gather funding. Whereas in Africa, these restrictions don't apply and funding is more readily available.

"The wolves are coming, their professional team and capital operations will bring large-scale production with low costs, and this will force the [Chinese] graphite industry to upgrade by eliminating backward capacities, consolidation and technical innovation," He said.
